Starbursts on grand scale

Starbursts on grand scale

This image was taken by the Hubble Telescope this morning. It captures the spiral galaxy NGC 5248, also known as Caldwell 45, located 42 million light-years away in the constellation Boötes.

It is a ‘grand design’ spiral galaxy with prominent spiral arms and a faint central bar. These structural features influence the movement of gas, fueling star formation and feeding its central black hole.

Last week news

  • NASA's OSIRIS-REx Returns with Asteroid Samples
After a 7-year journey, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission successfully delivered samples from the asteroid Bennu back to Earth. Scientists are eager to study the material, as it may hold clues about the early solar system and the origins of life on Earth. The capsule touched down in the Utah desert last week and is now in the lab for further analysis.

  • India's Chandrayaan-3 Lunar Rover Completes Mission
India's space agency, ISRO, officially declared the successful completion of its Chandrayaan-3 mission. The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover were put into sleep mode after an incredible series of operations on the Moon’s south pole, gathering essential data on the lunar surface.

  • SpaceX’s Starship Gets New Launch Date
SpaceX announced that its next Starship flight, designed for orbital testing, is slated for late October. This launch will be pivotal for testing the capabilities of the fully reusable spacecraft intended for Mars missions in the future.

Upcoming events

  • October 7, Hera Mission Launch: The European Space Agency's Hera mission will launch from Cape Canaveral. It will study the aftermath of NASA's DART mission, which impacted the moonlet asteroid Dimorphos in 2022, with the goal of better understanding asteroid collision deflection.

  • October 8-9, Draconid Meteor Shower: This meteor shower will peak with up to 10 meteors per hour. Although it is not the most active, the low moonlight makes it a great time for skywatching.

  • October 10, Europa Clipper Launch: NASA will launch the Europa Clipper to explore Jupiter's icy moon Europa. This mission will study Europa's potential to support life and gather data on its subsurface ocean.
